Who is this course for?

Nursery workers and Play Group leaders

Course objectives

On completion of training, successful candidates should be able to:

  • understand the role of the First Aider, including reference to:
    - the importance of preventing cross infection
    - the need for recording incidents and actions
    - use of available equipment
  • assess the situation in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency
  • administer cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (children and babies)
  • administer First Aid to a casualty who is unconscious (including seizure)
  • administer First Aid to a casualty who is choking or having respiratory problems
  • administer First Aid to a casualty who is wounded or bleeding
  • administer First Aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock
  • recognise and take appropriate action in the event of serious illness
  • provide treatment for minor injuries.

Duration/ format

12 hours over 2 days or maximum of 6 weeks each session to last 2 hours.

Course content

  • assessing situations and taking appropriate action, including informing the emergency services
  • reporting Accidents in the work place
  • requirements of First Aid kit and the prevention of cross infection
  • Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
  • secondary survey/recovery position
  • airway and breathing problems
  • recognising and treating shock
  • wounds and bleeding
  • minor injuries, burns and scalds
  • extremes of body temperature
  • major illnesses / medical conditions
